QYC member Mike McCafrey won the Day Sailer North American Championships. The regatta was hosted by
Massapoag Yacht Club in Sharron Massachusetts. The Fleet consisted of 25 boats from all over the country.

Twenty-five members of the
Day Sailers Association from across the country registered on time at the
Massapoag Yacht Club in Sharon, Massachusetts in anticipation of some exciting lake sailing during the last full week of July.
Sunny days with ample puffs of cumulus clouds created some twisty winds that sent spinnakers flying across the lake, attempting to harness every breath. Such delightful New England weather enabled the MYC regatta race committee to hold the required number of races scheduled the previous winter by its planning committee. Everyone was happy. In fact, several burgees were exchanged and hung up in the clubhouse.
The social scene included an evening of appetizers, followed the next night by some amazing flames producing “well done burgers and hots,” as provided by your host and company. Many MYC volunteers set aside a few of their summer vacation days to be involved in providing the food and race services. To appease this years’ annual banquet crowd, additional lobsters had to be added to the pot. Let’s not forget the tasty chicken n’ ribs! A few of the ladies wore long dresses— California style, for a sociable evening on clubhouse grounds overlooking the lake not far from the center of town. By this time, many were toasting sailing ingenuity.
After the last race and lunch the next day, the challengers seemed entirely satisfied to successfully complete the final phase of the regatta, deriving pleasure in tossing out the results of one race each. Scoring sheets were printed and handed out.
Eagerly, the Day Sailers and volunteers gathered to recognize and applaud all the victors and award winners. In first place, the Junior NACR and the 2006 DS NACR were both won by New England’s own McCaffrey family—Mike and son, Erik. The McCaffreys sail out of Fleet 67, Lake Quannapowitt, Wakefield, Massachusetts.
The challengers had to be thrilled, too, in competing with talented, new blood. The Day Sailer will surely sail on. Discussion earlier in the week at the annual meeting about finding a new Day Sailer designer had more credence.
By mid-afternoon on Thursday, most of the out-of-town boats were on their trailers and their skippers, crew and a few families, were now headed home or to some vacation spot. They were taking along numerous well-earned sailing awards and, we hope, light-hearted memories of our harmonious, self-help yacht club.
