7 Lasers Racing the First Day of Season

Yesterday nine Lasers rigged for sailing and seven of us went racing – a great show for the first Sunday race. The conditions were fine for those with experience, but challenging for those who either haven’t sailed a Laser ever or for years. What was impressive was the limited number of flips that occurred.

The winds turned on and shut off, veered around, and gave gifts to boats who were ready to grab them. There were a number of stupid, early season errors – many by yours truly – that kept the leads changing. I want to encourage other sailors to remember that it makes a difference which direction you round marks and whether or not you repeat a course; getting these right can really improve your standings.

Boat handling showed that frost biting and spring regattas are encouraging practice despite no club racing. Lasers were jibing in puffs and hunting each other down on the downwind legs with no wet surprises. Starts were tight and rewarded those who were willing to stick their bows into the fray.
