Summer Notes

We are about halfway through our sailing season and activities at QYC are in full swing.

The weather of late has not been very cooperative, but most of us have made the best of it.

The Race Committee under the direction of John Kerr has been fun for all those participating. Please see John’s comments further down in this Reef Points publication.

We had a very successful Adult Sailing Program and I’d like to thank Jeff Benagh and Eric Wojtaszek for all their coordination and guidance for our students. There are actually some people who wish to book private lessons and we are currently working out those details to accommodate those students.

The Youth Sailing Program, under the direction of our new Director, Mr. Carl Zimba, is in full swing and the students are having a wonderful summer. Deb Mason-McCaffrey has developed and tirelessly overseen this program for many years and will be stepping down from that position next year. Thank you for all you’ve done, Deb. Going forward, we are in need of someone to fill Deb’s position. The Board will be devoting its next meeting (August 18th) to discussing the future of the Youth Sailing Program and would welcome any and all suggestions.

At the last Board meeting, Jay Watt, volunteered and was appointed to a newly created non-board position of Club Sailboat Maintenance Coordinator. Jay, in conjunction with Gene Mullen, our Fleet Captain, will begin to assess the condition and subsequent cost of repairs and maintenance of our club-owned sailboats: Mercurys, DaySailers, Lasers, and Force 5s. After making those assessments, the Board will help Jay coordinate work parties to facilitate the work needed on those sailboats.

As always, if you have any suggestions on how to make QYC a better place, please let us know.

Best regards
