Wednesday night sailors got more action than they bargained for this week when a sudden storm rolled through. Heavy rains and high winds knocked over four boats. The club mercury, and crew, were driven to the south end of the lake near the commons where it ran aground. The windsurfers took advantage of the high winds and were planing back and fourth across the lake.
After the rain stopped and the wind calmed down rescue boats went out to retrieve capsized boats. Everyone remained calm and, thankfully, nobody was hurt. One Day Sailer did sink creating a very challenging retrieval operation. In the future everyone needs to make sure that their boat is equipped with the proper flotation. Quannapowitt is a very shallow lake so most any sunken boat can be retrieved. Retrieving sunken boats is difficult and very time consuming.
