The lake is one of the headwaters of the Saugus River. Quannapowitt Yacht Club has been in existence since 1884. In the early days, the lake was used as a source of ice during the Winter months as well as recreation during the Summer. Winds on the lake tend to be very shifty. Races are usually held in the North end of the lake. A "sea breeze" from the Southeast gives us an opportunity to use the full length of the lake. Sea breezes are common during hot Summer days. Regardless of the wind direction, the skill to tack or jibe at the correct time on the shifts is important to winning races on Lake Quannapowitt.
