Welcome!

Quannapowitt is the oldest inland boat club in America, founded in 1884. We are a family oriented boat club whose mission is to keep sailing costs low, and are perhaps "the best kept secret" and one of the most affordable boat clubs in eastern Massachusetts..

Come join us and get away from the daily grind in the wholesome outdoors. You can enjoy sailing near the city and near home in Wakefield at the Quannapowitt Yacht Club.

The Club features many active sailboat Fleets . QYC sailors are active in local, regional, and national regattas. Our racing calendar runs from May through mid-October each year. The facility is open all year for indoor activities.

QYC is located at the end of Linda Road, at the flashing light on North Avenue in Wakefield just South of Rt. 128 exit 39. At the end of the road, each social event and each sailing event is like a small vacation.

Membership is open to qualified individuals and families.Give us a call at 781-245-9518 or send e-mail for more information.

Racing - Get into the action!

The racing has picked up as the weather has warmed.  The Lasers and singled handed Daysailers had a decent turnout for the Summer I series with the Lasers averaging just over 4 starters and the Daysailers, just under 4.  Overall, the participation on Sundays is okay but it would be great if at least 3 Flying Scots, 3 Mercurys and 3 Daysailers were on the line every Sunday.

Adult Complete Lessons

The last night of the Adult Sailing Lessons was July 15. As always everyone had a great time thanks to the hard work that Jeff Benagh put into it. We had several weeks of bad weather and he had to make some tough calls to postpone the classes pushing out the lessons far longer than originally planned. Much thanks to the people who helped out with individual students in the boats.

May Brings Madness

Any lapse of concentration in a Laser regatta will throw racers up to their armpits in water trying to right their boats. So, it may seem silly to hold a regatta for these “wet” boats when the water is still cold enough to be painful, but most Laser sailors are willing to suffer for the satisfying speed a windy day can offer and a May regatta certainly offers the possibility of great winds, so the QYC May Madness Laser Regatta draws a crowd.

Message From The Commodore

Hi everyone,

Annual Meeting

Friday night's Annual Spring Meeting went very well. If you were there, thank youfor coming. If you were not able to make it, unfortunately, you missed an outstanding guest speaker. Diane Kampf, from the Flying Scot Association gave an excellent overview of the 19' Flying Scot and the organization. Diane has sent me a copy of her presentation in case anyone would like a copy.

Almost Time...

Spring is here and it is almost time to take the covers off of boats and get racing!

Calling It Quits

After everyone else had called it quits. After all of the turkey was gone. Brian and Steve declared the 2007 season over one week after the Thanks Giving holiday. They had been anxiosly watching the weather and predicted temperatures below freezing at night finally persuaded them to pull their boats out for the winter. Barely one week after the lake was mostly frozen over. Brian and Steve acquired their Scots this year and surely got their moneys worth.

It Always Rains...

It always rains on closing day. At least it always seems that way. This year it was not too cold so being wet was not all that bad. Generally sprits were high. The docks with new flotation required some engineering for winter storage but otherwise everything went smooth.

Some brave people have left their boats in the water to keep the summer alive. Hopefully their boats won't get locked in ice!

Last QYC Regatta of 2007 Approaching

Sad, but true, the end of the season is quickly approaching.  But that is no reason to not hit the water for one last regatta at QYC!  Every Laser sailor is welcome to attend the Last Blast Laser regatta Saturday October 13, 2007.  Each year the regatta grows in popularity.  You need to come because this may be the last one with a possiblity for good weather!

If you are a club member consider volunteering to help out and work down some volunteer hours.

QYC Junior Sailors Win Regional Junior Olympics

Youth Sailing Program alumni, and club members, Josh Krepps and Nick Vardaro took first place at the 2007 USA Junior Olympic Festival in the 420 white fleet. The regatta was hosted by the Lincoln Maritime Center in Hingham Massachusetts. Winning this event qualifies them to race in the Orange Bowl Regatta in December at the Coral Ree Yacht Club in Florida. Family and friends are working to aquire the funds they need to make the trip.

About 8 teams associated the club and the QYC Youth Program also competed in the regatta.
