About QYC

Believe it or not, sailing is a sport. At the same time, it's a sport that offers time away from the daily grind in the wholesome outdoors. The best part is that you can enjoy the sport near the city and near home in Wakefield at the Quannapowitt Yacht Club.

Facilities

QYC is located at the end of Linda Road, at the flashing light on North Avenue in Wakefield just South of Rt. 128 exit 39. At the end of the road, each social event and each sailing event is like a small vacation. Our building features a kitchen, rest/change rooms, meeting room, and club storage space. We meet on the deck or under the oak trees during the day, between races, and in the evenings to enjoy the company and the cool evenings beside the lake.

We also have a large, safe anchorage where you may keep your boat without charge. Club dinghies are provided to take you to your mooring to pick up your boat. Power boats owned by QYC provide a platform for running sailing activities and for rescue should you capsize. You can win the "Dunking Duck" award if you are the first capsize of the season!

Social Activities

Each summer, we have socials and cookouts to get all of our old and new friends together. Saturday night socials include steak and barbecued chicken cookouts. Between races and after races on Sunday we often have cookouts that are sponsored by our officers or by the fleets so that you can enjoy the club a little longer and avoid cooking Sunday meals.

After regattas at the club, the fleets have a cookout to relax and get to know fellow competitors. This is also a great way to exchange ideas and racing experiences. Racing Sailboat racing is a sport that is enjoyed by a wide range of age groups and by family racing teams. Our boats are inexpensive and evenly matched for fair competition. We sponsor one-design racing where boats of the same design compete with each other as well as a handicap fleet that uses elapsed time and Portsmouth Numbers to compute the scores. QYC also supports local board sailers by sponsoring board races on Thursday evenings during the Summer months.

Sailboat racing is both art and science. The objective is to sail a marked course and reach the finish line before your competition. The art is in handling the boat and learning its characteristics to make it go faster. The science is in judging wind shifts that can give you an advantage.

Our racing schedule begins in May and ends in October. We sponsor races each Wednesday evening during the Summer and races each Sunday during the racing season. There are frequent one or two-day regattas held on weekends at the club where boats from outside the club are invited to join us. You can join QYC members who travel to other clubs during the year. Our members have raced at regattas from the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead to yacht clubs as far away as Annapolis (MD), Sarasota (FL), and Eugene (OR).

Fleets

QYC features Day Sailer, Laser, 420s, Force 5s, Lasers, Optimist, and Cape Cod Mercury fleets. In 2003 the Flying Scot was added to the list of club sanctioned fleets.

The club owns 420s, Force 5s, Lasers, Cape Cod Mercuries, and a Day Sailer for use by qualified members. In addition, Optimist dinghies are available for qualified children sailors.
